UNITED  GRAFFITI  WRITERS

Thank you for visitng the official UGA website.

This is a website that will help you to understand the true story of  our organization, from its beginnings in 1972, until its disbandment in 1975-'76, as well as the contributions that the members of  U.G.A. made in the development of the Original School of Writin' in New York City in  the early 1970s, and continue to make to date, as Writin' has gone global in the 21st century.

In 1971, our group was brought together by an individual who was not a Writer himself. We the Writers referred to our art work on the public surfaces of NYC as "Writin', " yet, this individual named our group "United Graffiti Artists," instead of naming our organization "United Writin' Artists."

All of the members of UGA were against  the idea of including the infamous "g" word as part of the name for our organization.  The reason for this is that as part of our "cultural movement's language," we did not call the work we did on public surfaces by the "g" word, instead, we called it "writin' ." After much inner struggle, the majority of the membership agreed on the title "United Graffiti Writers" for our group.

Furthermore, we feel that the infamous "g" word is a racist and denigrating term, applied by certain racist elements of the upper class in our society, to a culture which was invented and developed by the children of the working class in NYC.

We feel that the "g" word is to "Writin' " what the "n" word is to African "American, and what the "s" word is to "Puerto Rican."
